Access Windows or Unlock Blaupunkt Lucca 3.3

Yep! I bought a Lucca 3.3. Was just checking a store and found one of those for 60 euros! What a bargain!

So I did a little searching and was able to find some information on how to unlock this baby and tought on writing a nice how-to.

So first of al, the package doesn’t include a wall charger, nor a USB cable, but I had a USB cable just laying around and solved one of the problems. The wall charger was a bit more dificult, but if you have a power converter you should be ok. The specifications state that the output should be of 12V, altough I’m using an old one I had here with an output of 9V, and everything seems ok =)

So, on to the hacking.

First reboot your Lucca and and when it reaches the second screen, the one stating that you should not drive and use the device, tap the following sequence on the touchscreen:

-> Tap on the upper-left corner

-> Tap on the upper-right corner

-> Tap on the lower-right corner

This should get you to a factory settings screen, there you just have to click on the lower-left button, the one with “File Explorer”

And there you go, an explorer window appears =) So, browse to the “Windows” folder and click on “ChangeUSB.exe”. In this new window, choose “ActiveSync”. Reboot you Lucca.

In you PC you have to install ActiveSync, but a special version, only ActiveSync 3.8 will work. I’m hosting the file here, but if you’re some kind of paranoid and are afraid that I have tampered with the file you can find a version at OldVersion here.

As soon as it is installed, when you plug the device, ActiveSync should recognize it and set it up. I would recommend you to *NOT* pair the device, so you can have a greater control on what is sent to the device. But hey, maybe I’m being paranoid here…

Now you have to download CeRegEditor, which I am also hosting here, but you can easily find it with Google. Install it, open it, and go to “Connection” and then click on “Connect”.

In this registry editor, go to “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE” and then “init”.

In the variable “Launch50″, change the value from “\Windows\LuccaLanguage.exe” to “\Windows\Explorer.exe”. Reboot the Lucca.

Et voilá! =)

Within the next hours I’ll try to get TomTom to run on it, as well as develop a custom menu for the Lucca, if I succed I’ll post it here.

Enjoy!

Mate, that was extremely helpful! Thanks alot, you really saved my skin :)

I tried it on a Blaupunkt TravelPilot 100 and it also worked. The difference was that the TP100 doesn’t have ActiveSync, but fortunately I found this little thingy, before I came across your page:

    http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=75889&whichpage=1

It has a few useful applications, including a RegEdit. But this page is the first I came across on what to modify in RegEdit.

Thanks again, and all the best!

    You’re welcome!

And thank you for the info.

By the way, TomTom runs beautifully on these machines =)

I’ll see if I write the instructions soon if anyone is interested.

    Best regards!

Thanks a lot! This helped so much to unblock Lucca 3.3 for a friend of mine.

Just now I am trying to install Automapa 5.3 but would appreciate to read your instructions for TomTom.

Best regards and thanks again! ;-)

  5. Dude says:

Hamo, I haven’t tried TomTom, because it doesn’t have maps for my country. Instead I installed iGO 8, and works like a charm.

Still, I have one problem: the “genius” in me modified the registry entry to directly execute iGO8.exe ,instead of Windows\Explorer.exe (which is good, cuz it works) but now I can’t access the Windows Shell.
iGO8.exe is located on the SD card.
    * If I try to remove the card, the PNA doesn’t boot. * If I try to access Windows without the card, I get an error (something like Invalid OS version) and I have to hard-reset it (disconnect/reconnect the battery).
    * If I try to access Windows with the SD card connected, it just starts iGO. It doesn’t show the “Factory Menu”.

I haven’t tried a software recovery from the DVD supplied with the PNA yet, but I think it should restore it and then I’ll have to remake the correct settings.

    Have a great day!

    Hi there!

Theoretically if you use the CeRegEditor you can revert the key to the original value, that should suffice.

I’m glad (sorry for your bad situation =D ) that you tried it because I was about to do that myself but thought that what happened to you could happen to me.

I believe the “warning” screen were you can access the factory setup should appear after a hard reboot.

Anyway, here is what you should do (in preferred order):

    1. Change the registry key with CeRegEditor (if you can)

    2. Load the SD card in you PC/Mac and change the executable to a shortcut linking to explorer.exe

    3. Copy the explorer.exe to the SD, change the name to iGO8.exe and hope for the best (I believe I have a complete backup of the system somewhere, I can send you the file if you want)

You know, I really am thinking on developing a menu with big buttons to load:

    -> Windows
    -> Custom GPS software
    -> Default GPS software
    -> Media player
    -> Photo viewer
    -> ??? (Any suggestion?)

    Best regards!

  7. Dude says:

    Thx for the quick reply!

I can’t access the registry editor because my model (TravelPilot 100) doesn’t have ActiveSync (or at least I couldn’t find it), so I can’t access the internal memory from my PC.

Instead, I also thought about your second option, but I don’t know how to create a shortcut as an .exe file that will link to \Windows\Explorer.exe
If I can figure this out, it should work.

If you have any ideas, please let me know. I`ll try it this weekend. The PNA is at a friend, so I can’t experiment sooner.

  8. jpoa says:

So how did you managed to edit the registry without ActiveSync?

I don’t think Windows will check the exe vs the lnk extension. Just make a explorer.lnk file and rename it to exe… Might work…

But IMHO, the best solution is to replace the iGo8.exe with explorer.exe

    Good luck!

  9. Dude says:

In the first link I posted there’s a set of utilities (mainly for unlocking Mio PNA’s) which includes, among others, a RegEdit and an on-screen keyboard. I used that one and I edited the registry directly from the PNA.

I`ll try it in the weekend and I`ll post a reply then, to let you know if I was successful.

    Have a great day!

can someone advise me if tomtom or i go with work on this gps and if so how can i do it thanks

  11. jpoa says:

I cannot see any reason why it shouldn’t work.

They are all running Windows CE underneath, it’s just a question of getting the right configurations.

    Best regards and good luck!

    Hello !
Can you help me for unlocking Novogo pna please ?!
    Thanks

  13. jpoa says:

    Hi there!

Is the software beeing run on a card?

A typical way to unlock pnas is to rename the exe to explorer.exe.

    Best regards!

  14. Bryan Dery says:

how on earth did you find that button combo?
I’ve been trying to find the factory mode on mine for weeks and i cant find it

would you know where to look?

  15. jpoa says:

    I found it in a forum :S

The link to that forum is in the article.

Sorry I cant be more helpful…

  16. Vince Siu says:

I have an Evesham N20 and was able to get into the registry with CDRegEditor. In this units “init” folder it has:
    Launch20 device.exe
    Launch30 gwes.exe
    Launch50 explorer.exe
    Launch60 services.exe
    Launch90 notifyRep.exe
    Launch97 GPSMC.exe
    Launch98 OVL_Manager.exe
    Launch99 Launch.exe

Looks like I already have explorer.exe in Launch 50 should it be elsewhere?

    thanks

  17. Mihai M. says:

Hello, can you help me, please with a Blaupunkt Lucca 5.3. I would like to run iGO 8 or another from the SD card. Is possible ?!

    Thank you, Mihai

  18. jpoa says:

    Hi there!
I would say that the GPS software is starting over explorer, maybe you should change the later ones to explorer.exe as well, no?

    Best regards!

  19. jpoa says:

    Hi there!

Have you managed to unlock the PNA already?

    Best regards!

  20. Vince Siu says:

Well I changed Launch 60 services.exe to explorer.exe and now I can’t get the unit to activesynch. Any ideas on how I can get the unit to be recongnized again.

    Thanks

  21. Mihai M. says:

    Hello,
I did not unlock my Blaupunkt Lucca 5.3
I’m not a specialist in pnaand/or pda and I don’t know how to do it.(witch programe to use)

  22. jpoa says:

But did the desktop appeared? :/

    If it did: Run services.exe

If it did not: I believe a custom firmware update might solve the issue, like those used to unlock the first luccas.

The custom firmware idea is simple: when you perform an update in a lucca, you access the factory mode and copy the contents of an sd card to the device, so Blaupunkt tells you to copy they update to an sd card and do just that. But before you run the update, you modify the exe of the software to explorer.exe, or wathever exe you want. In you case that would mean services.exe, in order to get ActiveSync back up.

Appearently that GPS is also known as MyGuide 2350.

Also try this, at step 2, if appliable: http://www.instructables.com/id/E09XJCR8JVEXCFIPHH/

    Good luck!

  23. jpoa says:

Did the factory mode method worked?

  24. lucca says:

    Hallo!

i´m interested in instructions how to get tomtom running on lucca 3.5 edition/ and how to get the menu like this:
    -> Windows
    -> tom tom software
    -> lucca software
    -> Media player
    -> Photo viewer
by the way my lucca is now unlocked, your instruction is working fine.
(Is it possible that tomtom or lucca is navigating with maps from sdcard and the media player is playing music from the same sdcard?)

    thanks

    i forgot

  26. jpoa says:

    Hello there!

I already have a menu and some other software running on my lucca, I just forgot to post it here :/

I will get to it today =) Regarding the problem of playing music and running the gps software, I believe it is possible, its just a matter of putting the music player process on the background.

    Best regards!

  27. lucca says:

thank you for your fast answer!
    its very kind.
and i´ll be anxious of your instructions

  28. jpoa says:

    Hi there!

Just posted the menu you were asking. There is a piece of software there that allows you to switch processes, so you can listen to music and travel =)

    You’re welcome!

  29. lucca says:

excuse me were did you post it?
    thanks

  30. Wiz says:

    Hi Jpoa
I got TT working fine on my Lucca 3.5D and I have used your custom menus…Excellent work :-)

What I am really struggling with is the damn task bar / foot bar. I can’t turn it off or auto hide it and when TT is running it’s always there blocking the buttons of the TT menu.

Is there is a way to disable it permanently? or auto hide it? on this unit?

    Cheers

    Wiz

  31. Wiz says:

Got it :-) Dword should be 1 not 0
    Cheers

  32. jpoa says:

Hi there! Do you mean the taskbar with the start menu and such? I can’t get it to appear at all :D
There is an exe called “TaskbarHide.exe” that may do what you want, check here.
Good luck and report afterwards please!

  33. jpoa says:

lol, too late =) Nice to know you managed to solve it. Thanks for the heads up!

  34. Wiz says:

    Hi Jpoa
One thing that would really put the icing on the cake…and that is: I would like to boot straight into your menu and I tried to change the registry (replacing explorer with your menu exe – using the correct path etc , but this is not working.
Could you please show me the way :-)
I would be so cool to rest the device and still boots into your nice menu :-)

    Cheers

Hi Jpoa, newbie question I’m afraid….
Where do I put extra map data files?
I have a Lucca 3.3 with UK and Ireland maps built in, and want to use some different maps I downloaded (Blaupunkt Lucca Europe\Greece_v11.map for example).
    Hope you can help

  36. jpoa says:

    Hi there!

In the original blaupunkt software I have no idea… I suposse you should need some sort of key… Why not use TomTom or other software? I found the Blaupunkt software at best in the level of TomTom. At best… Is there any special reason why you prefer it?

I’m sorry I cant help you any further, but I found these links, maybe they can help you:

    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3

PS: If you need any help getting TomTom tell me something…

  37. jpoa says:

Yeah, I want that too =)

I must try with Mortscript, I believe that it may do the trick.

I’ll get into that as soon as possible and post results.

  38. Wiz says:

    Hi
I did use mortscript and I’m having the same problem…and that is:
1-When I was using your menus and launching the .exe from explorer, the menus open but in the background, so I have to click x (shut down explorer) to see the menu.
Now I am using mortscript (using the welcome screen to lauch the menu) again I see the menu flash quickly before I’m back to the welcome screen.
So I is always sending itself to the background! any idea on how to fix it.?

    Cheers

    Wiz

  39. joeletaxi says:

    Hi Jpoa
Hmm, not sure what you mean ‘use tomtom or other’.
Really all I want to do is use the Travelpilot to navigate outside of the UK which means loading more maps.
If loading maps for the lucca is so difficult – whats the best way to achieve my goal – how do I use tomtom?
    Thanks in advance
    Dave

  40. jpoa says:

I would advise you to use TomTom instead of the Travelpilot for two reasons:
    - Better software in my opinion
    - Easier to install maps (at least I’ve managed to do it…)

Check this site and my posts for instructions…

  41. jpoa says:

i m not an expert in sat nav`s , i just try to find out how is posible to update(upload) full eu maps in my luca3.3 uk version. thank`s for ur help !!!

  44. jpoa says:

There is nothing requiring expert knowledge in this.
You can use whatever type of software for navigation. Usually people tend to prefer TomTom due to its functionality and popularity. I do not know how to add new maps to the lucca software, so I was suggestion you to install TomTom on your lucca and live happily ever after =)

  45. Byker says:

    i got TomTom worrking, thanks

but i have a problem regarding satellites, it takes more than 5 mins for the unit to acquire satellites, and it looses reception easily.

any ideas how to sort this out?

  46. jpoa says:

Well, the problem is that the GPS unit does not know here the satellites are at start. There are some apps that allow you to reduce this startup time by fetching the info regarding were the satellites will be during the day. I personally think this is unnecessary… Perhaps you can solve your problem with an external antenna. You can find some cheap ones at http://www.dealextreme.com.
